Apparently Matt Carpenter didn't feel so hot after he cooled down from Tuesday's game. Because the club placed him on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday morning with a strained oblique.
The Cardinals have replaced him on the active roster with Steven Hill, a catcher who can also play the infield and outfield corners in a pinch.
While it stinks to lose Carpenter, who was playing so well, the move to bring up Hill will allow manager Mike Matheny some versatility in that the team doesn't have to be afraid to use its second cacher and be left shorthanded if one of the receivers is injured.
Tony Cruz has suffered from a lack of regular at-bats, only getting a chance to hit on the rare days that starter Yadier Molina allows himself to take a day off.
