Largely unheralded in his trip through the minors, shortstop Pete Kozma is making a big impact as an emergency substitute for Rafael Furcal.
Kozma has passed major league utility man Daniel Descalso and fello call up Ryan Jackson on the major league depth chart at short. Known as a good glove man with not much of a bat, he's belted homers in consecutive games and is batting a very respectable .289 in limited duty.
I don't expect Kozma to be Derek Jeter or Ozzie Smith. But the Cardinals had to be pretty down when Furcal was injured because they had no one else in the organization with experience as a starter at shortstop. Basically, his playing well has the impact of helping other guys on the team visualize how they can field a squad capable of winning.
