The Giants have announced that they will send Madison Bumgarner to the hill for the first game of the National League Championship Series against the Cardinals while Ryan Vogelsong will pitch the second game.
Bumgarner, a lefty, was 16-11 with a 3.37 ERA in the regular season. He's got a 2-1 record with a 3.24 ERA in post season play over the course of his young career. But he hasn't fared so well in the 2012 playoffs. In one start against the Reds, Bumgarner allowed four runs on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings. He's 2-2 with a 3.62 ERA in four career starts against St. Louis.
Vogelsong was 14-9 with a 3.37 ERA in 2012. The 34-year-old former Pirates righty made his playoff debut against Cincinnati. He received no decision after allowing one run on three hits over five innings. He's 2-4 with a 6.51 ERA against the Cardinals.
The Cardinals, who were unable to re-set their rotation thanks to their series with the Nationals going the full five games, will send Lance Lynn to the mound in game one.
Lynn was supposed to be a fixture of the St. Louis bullpen in the 2012 playoffs after spening most of the season as a member of the starting rotation where he won 18 games. But Jaime Garcia's injury forced Lynn back into a starting role.
He made 29 starts in his 35 total appearances, compiling a 2.78 ERA and striking out 180 batters in 176 innings of work. Lynn has a 3-1 record with a 4.30 ERA in 14 post season games. Lynn is 0-2 with a 7.15 ERA in two career starts against the Giants.
The Cardinals have not yet officially announced their game two starter yet. But the club has said that it won't use Chris Carpenter on short rest. And it's presumable that they won't use Adam Wainwright on short rest, either.
