Profar struggles in winter league, likely convincing Texas to hang on to Andrus

Looking at the Cards from a fan's perspective

The Rangers have insisted this 0ff-season that they plan to hang on to incumbent shortstop Elvis Andrus, one of my favorite potential Cardinals trade targets, despite the arrival of top prospect Jurickson Profar last season at the major league level.

And, with the way Profar is playing in the Domincan Winter League, I'd say Texas isn't likely to change its mind anytime soon.

Profar is batting a paltry .158 for the Tigres del Licey, including a recent 3-for-34 skid.

It could be that the 19-year-old shortstop, who some say is the best prospect in baseball, is simply out of gas after playing a full minor league season before getting the call up to the Rangers and then heading out for winter baseball.

But with such a short track record in the pros, I'd be surprised if Texas was willing to spend a lot of money on free agents like Zack Grienke and Josh Hamilton only to risk letting things blow up by counting on a shortstop who might not be totally ready for prime time.

Still, I would love to see Andrus, a veteran of two World Series, in Cardinals red. He's cheaper than Rafael Furcal and on the upswing of a career that has so far seen him become an accomplished hitter and base stealer.
