Looking at the Cards from a fan's perspective

The Cardinals will get Class AA Shortstop Jake Lemmerman in return for Skip Schumaker, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Lemmerman, 23, hit .233 with seven homers, 46 RBIs and eight stolen bases in eight tries last season at Chattanooga. He is a .285 hitter over three minor league seasons.

A Duke University product, Lemmerman is 6-foot-1 and weighs 195 pounds. Baseball Prospect Nation ranked him as the 14th best prospect in the Dodgers system and issued the following report:

Though he struggled upon being pushed to Double A in his first full season, Lemmerman still shows a good glove an decent offensive skills. He is a fringe-average runner by has tremendous instincts and reactions in the field that give him a chance to play shortstop. His hands and arm are very good. He makes contact at a good clip and has the knowledge of the strike zone to get on base aside from his hitting. He has the strength to drive the ball to the gaps with regularity. He is a max effort player that plays above his raw tools and he has an outside shot to be a regular shortstop with a backup option of being a very nice offensive and defensive utility player.

It doesn't sound like anyone expects Lemmerman to become the next Ozzie Smith. But, then again, not many people thought much of the relatively undistinguished Class AA player the Redbirds got in return for Jim Edmonds back. And he turned out to be THE David Freese of 2011 World Series fame. So I guess you never know how players are going to develop until they're developed.

Frankly, the Cardinals had no place for Schumaker and his $1.5-million contract on the major league roster. So, if General Manager John Mozeliak didn't convince the Dodgers to part with Lemmerman, there was a pretty good chance that Schumaker would have come to spring training as a dead man walking and that the Birds would have had to eventually release him and eat his contract.
