Rumors are floating around that the Cardinals will announce at a 1:30 p.m. press conference that 2005 Cy Young Award winner Chris Carpenter will retire.
The various reports are speculative in nature and say that the Cardinals are tight-lipped about the nature of the announcement. But the team has apparently said that it has nothing to do with a player signing.
I certainly hope this isn't true because there are no better competitors in the game than a healthy Carpenter. And I would hate to see the guy go through radical surgery in effort to get back on the mound only to see it all be for nothing.
If Carpenter does retire, I hope the Cardinals immediately take his money and give it to Kyle Lohse on a short-term contract. I think offering him the $13.3-million he would have got if he accepted the Cardinals' tender offer would be appropriate. And the Birds could throw in a mutual option and a promise not to make a tender at the end of 2014 to sweeten the pot.
