Looking at the Cards from a fan's perspective

According to CBS Sports, the Tigers are looking to make a deal for a closer. They'd be an intriguing potential trade partner for the Cardinals -- if they had a shortstop who could slide into Rafael Furcal's slot on the roster.

Unfortunately, they don't.

But the Tigers have been shopping starting pitcher Rick Porcello. I wonder if the Redbirds would have any interest in a more experienced arm for their starting rotation which now stands to include at least one rooking pitcher.

Porcello is 48-42 over four seasons with a 4.55 ERA. He's got a powerful right arm. But he hasn't had a lot of luck thus far in refining his pitches or in pitching economically. He's allowed 800 baserunners in 692 2/3 innings.

The Cardinals could effectively hit the reset button on the 2013 season, already marred by the loss of veterans Chris Carpenter and Rafael Furcal to injury, could trade Jason Motte to the Tigers for the enigmatic Porcello.

Mitchell Boggs, who was outstanding last year as a set-up man, could be moved to the closer role at least temporarily while Trevor Rosenthal is groomed for the job next season or in 2015.

It's an unlikely move as the Cardinals are keeping a brave face about being able to compete in 2013. And they very well might if they could stay in contention to the All-Star Game and then make a key trade or two. But it's intriguing to think about making an opportunistic deal.
