Looking at the Cards from a fan's perspective

St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak told MLB radio that he would have to at least consider dealing outfield prospect Oscar Taveras to the Texas Rangers if they offered top shortstop prospect Jurickson Profar in return.

He explained that the Redbirds are deep in the outfield but that they don't have a lot of options when it comes to major league shortstops.

But I bet that deep down inside he hopes the opportunity to make that deal never presents itself.

While both players look like they have very promising futures on the horizon, trading a potential superstar for another potential superstar is a high wire act without a net. If Profar turns out to be a bust and Taveras becomes a regular all-star or a batting champion, well... that's the sort of thing that gets guys fired.

It would be a lot easier to explain not making that sort of trade than it would be to gain sympathy if you made that swap and it blew up in your face.

The Rangers, who signed incumbent shortstop Elvis Andrus to a long term contract extension a few days ago, can afford to take a gamble now with Profar. Dallas Morning News columnist Kevin Sherringon thinks Texas ought to try to deal the top prospect in baseball if they could get a return that would help the club in an area of need.

But, if I was in charge in St. Louis, I don't think I would be willing to deal away a guy the Cardinals have been in love with for two years -- unless there is something big and negative about him behind the scenes about him the general public doesn't know about.

Taveras could be a few weeks away from St. Louis. While the grass looks greener on the other side, I think the Birds need to stick with the plan and hang on to their prospects.
