Looking at the Cards from a fan's perspective

Cardinals infielder Daniel Descalso added to his team-leading error total Tuesday night... But he more than made up for the miscue with a 3-for-3 night at the plate that included a home run and five RBIs to lead St. Louis to a 10-2 win over the San Diego Padres.

Descalso singled and scored in the third inning to erase a 1-0 San Diego lead then he doubled home Jon Jay to put the Cardinals ahead in the fifth. It was part of a four-run outburst that put St. Louis ahead to stay.

In the eighth inning Matt Holliday reached base when he struck out on a wild pitch and then Allen Craig singled. After Yadier Molina grounded the runners to second and third, Jay was intentionally walked to load the bases and bring Descalso to the plate. And the versatile infielder made the Padres pay with a home run to right center.

St. Louis ace Adam Wainwright scattered four hits over 7 1/3 innings. He allowed one run in the second when he got into a first and third jam with no outs. Wainwright induced a ground ball that allowed the runner to cross the plate while a double play was turned, eliminating the possibility of a big San Diego inning.

Wainwright struck out six hitters and walked one. His season average was lowered to 0.97 baserunners per inning of work.

Rookie hurler Carlos Martinez pitched the last 1 2/3 innings of the game. He allowed three hits and a run but ended the contest by drawing a double play.

Matt Carpenter, Carlos Beltran, Pete Kozma and Craig each chipped in two hits to help propel the offense.

Cardinals Star of the Game: Descalso

Cardinals Play of the Game: Descalso's grand slam was the first of his career.

Lowlight: Descalso's error, which came on a throw, was his sixth of the season. The usually sure handed Descalso has made five of his miscues at second base with the other coming at shortstop. The error total is surprising because Descalso has started less than half of the Cardinals games.
