Game 68: Cardinals 13, Marlins 7

Looking at the Cards from a fan's perspective

The Cardinals win Saturday over the Marlins is quite possibly the ugliest of their 44 victories in many ways.

After all, the team blew a five-run lead and couldn't put away what it arguably the worst team in baseball until late in the game.

But the fact that the Redbirds were able to keep punching and come away with a victory on a day when their starting pitcher didn't have his best stuff turned out to be a beautiful thing in the end.

Lance Lynn, near the top of the National League statistical charts in wins and earned run average before the start of the game, got bombed for all seven runs thanks to nine hits and three walks distributed.

If the Cardinals bullpen was in better shape, Lynn probably would have been pulled from the game in the top of the fifth inning. Instead, he was allowed to bat with the bases loaded and two out in a tight game -- and he had his best moment of the contest: A two run single to help St. Louis grab control of the game.

Lynn came back out for the bottom of the fifth, despite the fact that he was nearing 100 pitches, and managed to complete the frame to become eligible for the win. After the inning was over, he could be seen with his hands on his knees as he seemed to struggle to keep his composure and Lynn's jersey was soaked through. I wonder if he was sick during his unusually rough outing.

Cardinals Star of the Game: Someone who was certainly feeling well was right fielder Carlos Beltran who hit two homers and a triple while scoring three runs and driving in two more. David Freese wasn't too far behind with a 3-for-4 day with a homer that raised the St. Louis third baseman's batting average to .292 for the season.

Cardinals Play of the Game: Lynn's two-out, two-run hit.

Lowlight: Lynn's day was pretty awful. But he was able to absorb seven earned runs in five innings and have his ERA remain and a solid 3.56 while he improved his record to 9-1 for the season.
