Game 11: Cardinals 10, Cubs 4

Cheap Seats

Looking at the Cards from a fan's perspective

Things in baseball have a funny way of evening out. And that was the case Saturday at Busch Stadium.

The last time he started for the St. Louis Cardinals, ace Adam Wainwright pitched spectacularly but was victimized by poor run support. On Saturday Wainwright didn't have his best stuff. But the Redbirds batsmen busted out the good lumber and scored 10 runs on 13 hits and routed the Chicago Cubs.

Wainwright started the game on a sour note when he gave up a solo homer to the first hitter of the game, Chicago left fielder Junior Lake. He would end up surrendering an uncharacteristic four earned runs in seven innings of work.

But the Cardinals offense plate four runs in the second inning and five more in the fourth to put the game out of reach and, when the Cubs rallied with a pair of runs in the sixth, the Birds were able to prevent a bigger rally and then they answered with a run in the bottom of the inning to reach the final score of 10-4.

Matt Adams led off the scoring with a line drive home run just over the right field fence. It was his first long ball of the year. Then, after Yadier Molina reached, left fielder Allen Craig collected a hit with a runner on base to raise his average to a modest .105.

Cardinals Star of the Game: Molina was 2-for-5 with a double to push his season batting average to .326.

Cardinals Play of the Game: Adams' home run. It was a small part of the score sheet. But Adams has been making an obvious effort to hit the ball to the opposite field and he's sacrificed power for average. So it's good to see that he's putting it all together and starting to hit the ball to all fields.

Lowlight: Shortstop Jhonny Peralta was benched because of his struggles at the plate.
