Former St. Louis Cardinals lefty Sam Freeman has been designated for assignment by the Texas Rangers.
Freeman, 27, was sent to Texas March 28 for either a player to be named later or cash. But he didn't make the big league roster and the Rangers waived him despite the fact that he would have been the club's only lefty reliever.
Freeman is 3-2 over parts of three major league seasons with an earned run average of 3.33. He would have to clear waivers before he could be sent to the minors by the Texas.
The Redbirds had no room for Freeman, who was out of options, on their major league roster with veteran Randy Choate and Kevin Siegrist earning the two spots for southpaws in the St. Louis bullpen.
