Rams release troubled tight end Byrd

2006 pick had legal, production problems

News-Democrat

The St. Louis Rams released tight end Dominique Byrd, a third-round draft pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, on Monday.

Byrd's tenure with the Rams was marked by a lack of production on the field and problems off the field.

Byrd, 24, is scheduled to stand trial next week in St. Louis Circuit Court on charges of assault and armed criminal action stemming from an altercation in a bar in December 2005.

Byrd alleging hit a bar patron in the face with a drinking glass.

Byrd was arrested for DUI in March 2007 in California. He pleaded no contest and received three years of probation.

The 6-foot-2, 254-pound Byrd played in 14 games -- mostly on special teams -- during his two seasons with the Rams. He has six catches for 83 yards and one touchdown in his career.

Byrd caught four passes for 44 yards last season. He was inactive for seven of the Rams' 16 games in 2007.

Byrd was the 93rd overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft out of the University of Southern California, where he caught 77 passes for 936 yards and four touchdowns in 38 games.

Rams coach Scott Linehan declined to comment on Byrd's release.
