Cougars set for regional opener

Ferris State's 1-0 victory over Saginaw Valley State was the only full game completed Wednesday at the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Softball Regional at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

Heavy rain wiped out the rest of the schedule.

The second game between Lewis and West Virginia Wesleyan, tied 3-3 in the sixth inning, resumes at 11:30 a.m. today, and the rest of the tournament schedule has been revised.

SIUE, the No. 1 seed, takes on No. 8 West Virginia State at 1:30 p.m. today. Double-elimination tourney play continues Friday and Saturday with the championship set for 10 a.m. Sunday.

SIUE pitcher Kaitlin Colosimo earned first team All-Region honors Wednesday and also was named the region's Pitcher of the Year by Daktronics.

SIUE shortsop Kaeleigh Rousey also was named second team All-Region after helping the Cougars win their last 18 games of the season.

Colosimo (26-5) has struck out 210 batters in 193 1/3 innings, walking only 26. The junior led SIUE to its third straight Great Lakes Valley Conference crown and the team's ninth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

Rousey, a senior, leads the Cougars with 55 hits and her eight homers are second on the team.
