Homemade liqueurs: Gifts to sip and savor

Homemade gifts from the kitchen are culinary treasures. They have a personal touch and in these challenging economic times, a present from hearth and heart seems especially meaningful. So when I spied A.J. Rathbun's new book, "Luscious Liqueurs" (Harvard Common Press, $12.95) I knew I'd found the blueprint for my '08 holiday gifts.

Spicy cornbread stuffing

This holiday season, add a Latin twist to an American classic: stuffing. Perfect with ham or turkey, Cornbread and Chile Stuffing is sure to become a family favorite. The recipe is from Maggi, the maker of granulated bouillon.

Poll:
Who do you think should have won the NL Cy Young Award?
  • Dry conditions prevent plant disease

    Q. I have enclosed a sample of the condition that developed on all of our tomatoes this summer. The tomatoes were a very nice size and when they started to ripen they would develop this condition. Some of them would be nearly ripe when it hit. We did not use any of our tomatoes because we were afraid we would get sick. Do you have an answer?

  • Enough blabbering about blubber!

    Q. One of my friends, who is slightly overweight, talks and talks and talks about it like no one else has ever gained a pound. Then she's always talking about how she is going to go on a diet, asks everyone what they do to stay "thin," where they go exercise, what machines they use and on and on. Then she never does any of it for herself.

  • You can't argue with the claw

It didn't matter what we were playing -- baseball, freeze tag, Red Rover. If we had to choose sides, we'd get out the Big Bat.
