Archbishop ordains new deacons

Archbishop-designate George J. Lucas will ordain 12 men to the Order of Deacons for the Catholic Diocese of Springfield at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Agnes Church in Springfield.

Among those being ordained are:

* Dennis W. Baker, of Decatur, a member of Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Parish in Mt. Zion. He will be assigned there and at St. Isidore Parish in Bethany.

* Jerry L. Cato, of Edwardsville, a member of St. Cecilia Parish in Glen Carbon, where he will be assigned.

Learn about POA, living wills

First United Presbyterian Church's Parish Nursing program will sponsor "Advance Directives, Living Wills, and Power of Attorney" at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the church, 1303 Royal Heights Road, Belleville.

Attorneys Nancy Larson and Heidi Dodd from Harter, Larson & Dodd, LLC, will present this free one-hour program.

Bring a brown bag lunch. Drinks will be provided.

New Bible study begins June 28

A Kerygma Bible study, "Blessed Are You: The Beatitudes of Jesus in Scripture and Life," will begin at 9:15 a.m. June 28, July 5, 12, 19 in the parish hall at St. George's Episcopal Church, 105 E. D St., Belleville.

The Holy Eucharist will be celebrated at 8 and 10:30 a.m.

Roundtable series continues at Shrine

The National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows, along with the Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis, will present the sixth session of the 2009 Roundtable Series.

The lecture will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 30 in the Shrine Conference Center. The topic will be "How to Pray in a Noisy World" with the Rev. Harry Byrne.
