Genealogical Society events

The St. Louis Genealogical Society will host two events:

* "Google Your Family Tree" by Daniel M. Lynch, Aug, 15 at the Viking Conference Center, Sunset Hills, Mo. Lynch will talk on "Basic facts about using search engines"; "Special symbols for effective filtering"; "Search strategies"; "Conducting queries for names and places"; "Searching Google Books." The fee is $45 for members and $55 for non-members which include lunch. Prices increase after Aug. 1.

* "Virginia: The Old Dominion State" by Barbara Vines Little, CG, Oct. 24 at the Viking Conference Center in Sunset Hills, Mo. She will discuss "County Records: The Nuts and Bolts of Virginia Research"; "Patents and Grants: Virginia's Land Records"; "Virginia's Tax Records: A Gold Mine of Information"; "Virginia's Military Recoards: Colonial Militia through the Civil War." The fee is $45 for members and $55 for non-members. The cost includes lunch.

Senior Idol contestants sought

A new activity highlights this year's Living Well Expo (formerly Seniorama) on Sept. 25 at Belle-Clair Fairgrounds in Belleville.

Finalists will compete for the title of Belleville's Senior Idol.

Senior Idol is open to people age 55 and older. They must attend one of the audition sessions in order to perform at the finals. At the audition, contestants will be asked to sing a capella for the judges a song of their choice.

Auditions will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Aug. 10 and from 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 11 at Programs and Services for Older Persons, 201 N. Church St., Belleville.

A $10 non-refundable entry fee is due with the application.
