Minister honored for 50 years

Calvary Lutheran Church, 6606 W. Main St., Belelville, will host a 50th ordination anniversary celebration for the Rev. Ervin Buhs at the 10 a.m. worship service Sunday.

Bishop Warren Freiheit will preside. A luncheon will follow at the St. Clair Country Club. Cost is $20 per person and reservations are due by Friday by calling 397-4989.

Also, the church is accepting Sunday School registration for adult Bible study, young adult Sunday class and children religious school.

Church hosts rummage sale

First United Presbyterian Church Helmsmen will host a rummage sale from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 12 in the church gym.

The Helmsmen host this annual sale to raise money to donate to various groups both within the church and the community.

The church is at the corner of Highway 161 and Royal Heights Road in Belleville.

Learn to 'read a church'

"How to Read a Church" will be at 7 p.m. Thursday and Sept. 17 and 24 at the Cathedral of St. Peter in Belleville.

The course is for those who want to know more about what they see in a church or cathedral.

Father John Myler and Father Steven Beatty will discuss "The Church Building and the Cross of Christ" at 7 p.m. Thursday. On Sept. 17, the discussion will be "The Church Building and the People of God" followed by Sept. 24 with "The Church Building and the New Jerusalem."

Shrine hosts healing service

A Chrismatic Mass and healing service will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 12 at Christ the King Chapel, National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows, 442 S. DeMazenod Drive, Belleville.

Taize prayer service offered

St. Clare Church in O'Fallon will host an evening of Taize prayer at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church, 1411 Cross St., O'Fallon.

The prayer lasts about 40 minutes.

Food drive benefits several pantries

The first Metro East food drive, sponsored by Servpro of Belleville/O'Fallon and Christ the King Apostolic Church, will benefit Mt. Zion Baptist Church Food Pantry in East St. Louis, the Collinsville Area Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry in Collinsville and the Community Interfaith Food Pantry of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Belleville.

A bag distribution day is Sept. 12, followed by a food pick-up day Sept. 19.

Food drive wrap-up and barbecue for volunteers will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 19.

Church hosts homecoming event

Our Lord's Lutheran Church in Maryville will host a homecoming weekend at 5 p.m. Sept. 12 and at 8 and 10:45 a.m. Sept. 13 at the church, 150 Wilma Drive, Maryville.

A high school youth lock-in will be from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sept. 11-12. A blessing of the three-year-olds, plus installation of the education staff and installation of youth leaders will occur at all services.

Children's church is at 5 p.m. Sept. 12. Junior high confirmation is at 9:15 a.m. Sept. 13, followed by Sunday School at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 13 and an outdoor worship before the picnic at 10:45 a.m. Sept. 13.

The homecoming picnic and games will be from noon to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at the church.

Church offers JustFaith classes

JustFaith, a 30-week ecumenical program that explores the intersection between spirituality and social justice, will be offered at St. Clare Catholic Church O'Fallon, 1411 Cross Street.

Participants can choose from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesdays or from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Fridays. Wednesday sessions start Sept. 16 and Friday sessions start on Sept. 18.

Participants will read and discuss several books addressing the foundations of the Bible and church teaching, prayer and spirituality, the social and political reality of our world today and the lived experience of christian role models.

The program also includes two retreats and four immersion experiences.
