Garry Herron was named the new head football coach at East Alton-Wood River High School at Tuesday night’s school board meeting.
Herron, 31, has been an assistant coach at Roxana High School since 2012. He will succeed Joe Parmentier who resigned as head coach after the 2014 football season.
Herron was a top assistant at Roxana the past two seasons under head coach Pat Keith. He has also held assistant coaching positions at Jersey Community High School for three years under head coach Gary Carter and began his coaching career at East Alton-Wood River in 2003.
The Oilers are coming off of a 1-8 (1-6) season and are members of the Prairie State Conference, along with Marquette, Metro East Lutheran, Mt. Olive, Bunker Hill, Pawnee, South Fork, and Nokomis.
“Garry’s experience of calling the varsity offense and defense as an assistant coach will be a great asset for him moving forward,” said Adam Miller, East Alton-Wood River Athletic Director. “He’s the right person to get our football program going in the right direction.”
Herron is a 2002 graduate of East Alton-Wood River High School. He graduated from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville in 2013.
