More than 520 retailers throughout the metro-east, St. Louis, Cape Girardeau and Paducah are uniting to raise money to help the Muscular Dystrophy Association save and improve the lives of people fighting muscle disease by participating in the 33rd annual MDA Shamrock program. It began Feb. 1 and runs through March 31.
Muscular dystrophy and related life-threatening diseases take away people’s ability to walk, move, talk, smile and even breathe.
With numerous local grocery stores, convenience stores and restaurants participating in the popular St. Patrick’s Day program, customers can help accelerate progress in the fight against muscle disease by adding a shamrock to their purchase at checkout for just a $1, $5 or a larger contribution.
The MDA Shamrock program is the nation’s largest St. Patrick’s Day-themed fundraiser. Funds raised build on decades of research progress, helping push science to its limits in the search for treatments and cures. Dollars raised also help support MDA’s life-enhancing programs such as state-of-the-art support groups and clinics, including the MDA Clinic at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. They also make MDA summer camp possible so kids with muscle disease can enjoy “the best week of the year” at Pinecrest Camp & Convention Center in Fredericktown, Mo.
