Daughters of the American Revolution want their gavel back

The Belleville Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is looking for a lost keepsake. When the Chapter began in 1916, it was presented with a wooden gavel. The gavel was used throughout the years until it was lost. It is possible that the gavel was sold at a yard sale/auction in Belleville or Albers between 2000 and 2009.

The Belleville Chapter will celebrate its 100th anniversary next year and would like to be reunited with the gavel, an integral part of its history. The gavel is made out of wood and has a brass band around it that states it was made from oak from the original floor of Abraham Lincoln’s Law Office in Springfield. It was given to the chapter by organizing regent Evelyn Trautmann.

If you have information about the gavel, please call Belleville Chapter Regent Gail Evans at 618-346-8039.
