Stream 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly' for Free-Ranked 10th Greatest Western!

Sergio Leone was an innovator on the cinematic front. He pioneered an entire film subgenre-the spaghetti Western-and few filmmakers have truly captured his magic. His movies frequently occupy best-of lists and rankings for Westerns, especially his Dollars trilogy starring the iconic Clint Eastwood.

One film from the aforementioned trilogy, in particular, is frequently hailed as one of the greatest Westerns of all time. It currently sits pretty at No. 10 on Time Out's "50 Greatest Western Movies" list. That's right; it's Leone's The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Premiering on Dec. 23, 1966, in Italy, the epic spaghetti Western is considered the third and final installment.

Here's a synopsis for the uninitiated:

"A bounty-hunting scam joins two men in an uneasy alliance against a third in a race to find a fortune in gold buried in a remote cemetery."

The Western classic stars Eastwood as Blondie/The Man With No Name, Eli Wallach as Tuco, Lee Van Cleef as Sentenza/Angel Eyes, Aldo Giuffrè as Captain Clinton, Antonio Casas as Stevens, and Rada Rassimov as Maria. Leone directed from a screenplay he co-wrote with Luciano Vincenzoni and Age & Scarpelli.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly was a box-office success, grossing $38.9 million on a $1.2 million budget. Critically, reviews were mixed, with some critics lambasting the film for its depiction of violence. At the time, spaghetti Westerns were excoriated for failing to adhere to the morals of traditional Hollywood Westerns. Thankfully, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly was better received in retrospect. It left an indelible impact on pop culture.

Time Out praises Leone's seminal work for being "single-mindedly dedicated to just telling a damn good yarn." It adds that one is "always knocked back by how much there is to rediscover" during rewatches, and that it "works so astonishingly well on the surface that digging any deeper doesn't just feel pointless, but ever so slightly wrong."

If you haven't seen this classic or are jonesing for a rewatch, mosey on over (or sprint, if that's your thing) to Tubi to watch The Good, the Bad and the Ugly for free.
