These Pet Parents Said All the Trigger Words at Once, and This Orange Cat Is Not Having It

Cats are different from dogs. They're trainable, absolutely, but most cats live a life of luxury, roaming the house like a panther, lounging like a lion and coming for lap cuddles in their own time-but there are a few words they've learned from experience.

The mere mention of a vacuum or a vet visit can strike fear in the heart of any mighty feline, and these cat parents decided to test just how many trigger words their cat absorbed.

Penny the Ginger Cat is a sweet and sassy thing with a YouTube channel full of cute clips and lots of cat attitude. In this short, she's getting some payback from mom and dad.

"Saying all of Penny's trigger words," the caption reads, and her face throughout the experience is just too funny.

"Is she ready to go to the vet?" Mom starts, and right away, Penny's ears perk up with alarm.

"No, I still have to give her a bath!" Dad responds, "and brush her teeth, too." More shock.

"But the guests are coming over any minute now," Mom says.

"Where's her carrier, hun?" Dad continues.

"It's next to the vacuum cleaner," Mom announces, and the conversation unfolds like a waterfall of worry, with mentions of babies and tinfoil, nail trimmings and vet shots flying around like missiles.

Honestly, for the level of trauma, Penny stays relatively calm. After her third or fourth trigger word, a sense of disbelieving calm washes over the cutie. Clearly, Mom and Dad are up to some tricks. No way all these terrible things could happen in one day!

"Penny's thinking this is the worst conversation she's ever heard," said one commenter.

"I've seen people confess to crimes with less horror in their eyes," joked another.

"This has got to be qualified as psychological warfare," said another-we agree!

How Many Words Can Cats Learn?

It's useful for Penny and other cats to learn a bit of human vocabulary, and research shows cats can learn anywhere from 20 to 50 words.

Of course, they're not learning them the same way we do. Rather than truly comprehending the meaning, they learn by associating memories with specific words, so if you say "vet" and that always leads to a doctor visit, they start to associate those sounds with the experience of leaving the house and going to that specific place.

How you say a word is just as important as what you're saying, because cats pick up on the tone of your voice and the body language you exhibit as much as the actual sounds. If you're happy and excited about something, your cat will pick up on that energy and associate that word with a happy feeling-as long as that happy feeling lasts.

Of course, the word they learn best is their own name. They also learn the names of their fellow housemates, so be sure you say those names with love whenever possible!
