Clubs and organizations: Landlords hear from JACIL rep
May 23-Jacksonville Sunrise Rotary Club
As morning dawned on a rainy day, 10 Rotarians and one traveling member dodged the raindrops to gather in the back room of Rudi's Grill. While some ordered breakfast, the Unbreakable Polio Jar was passed around the narrow meeting table while greetings and chatter ebbed and flowed.
President Brittany arrived right on time and rang the May 5 meeting open at 7 a.m., followed by Jay leading the Pledge of Allegiance, Mary leading the Four-Way Test (five for the fun-loving members) and Pat giving the opening prayer.
Rotations were made by Brittany, Don, Mary, Sarah Robinson, Ella, Jay, Jane Zachary, Sarah Edmiston and Don. Brittany did an excellent job of coaxing donations to the scholarship fund with Recognitions for everyone. With no program scheduled, the club got down to the business at hand. Pat reminded everyone to pick up geraniums to deliver in time for Mother's Day. Then Pat handed around lists of potential businesses for the discount card fundraiser to review and for inspiration. Jay will email out the consent discount forms.
Pat announced the scholarship winners and how they were chosen. It was a difficult decision. All applicants were very accomplished and involved with employment and extracurricular activities. Brittany asked members to consider participating in National Night Out coming up in August.
When all topics were covered, President Brittany rang the meeting to a close at 7:43 a.m. The next meeting will be at 7 a.m. May 12 in the back room of Rudi's Grill. All guests and visiting Rotarians are welcome.
Upcoming events:
-Scholarships Awarded - May
-Meeting - 7 a.m. May 12 at Rudi's Grill
-Pack-the-House - 4:30 p.m.-close May 13 at Los Rancheros

Jacksonville Lions
As a rainy spring day cooled toward evening, nine Lions gathered in the back room of Rudi's Grill. A few ordered meals, perhaps a few ordered the taco salad in celebration of Cinco de Mayo. When the time was right, Vice President Lion Debbie used her tiny bell to tinkle open the May 5 meeting at 6:31 p.m., followed by one of the speediest meetings known to the current Lions (the incoming president may have been taking notes), with Secretary Cheri reading past minutes and the treasurer's report. After both were accepted by the club, Secretary Cheri announced the dues and flag subscriptions she had received so far.
Highlights from the night's meeting included inducting new member Lion Beth Ramsay. After pictures were taken, the club discussed plans for Trivia Night. Lions are joining the 21st century! Stay tuned for details. The Avenue of Flags will appear later this month in celebration of Memorial Day.
After reviewing upcoming important dates in the Lions calendar, Vice President Lion Debbie and her tiny bell tinkled the meeting to a close at 6:53 p.m. The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. May 19 in the back room of Rudi's Grill.

-Meeting - 6:30 p.m. May 19 at Rudi's Grill

Jacksonville Sunrise Rotary Club
As a brilliantly sunny morning dawned, 11 Rotarians, one traveling member and one guest speaker gathered in the back room of Rudi's Grill. While some ordered breakfast, the Unbreakable Polio Jar was passed briskly around the narrow meeting table while greetings and chatter ebbed and flowed. President Brittany arrived just in time to ring open the May 12 meeting at 7:03 a.m., followed by Ella leading the Pledge of Allegiance, Jay leading the Four-Way Test (five for the fun-loving members) and Pat giving the opening prayer.
Rotations were made by Mary, Jay, Pat, Ella, Cindy and Don. Brittany did a wonderful job of coaxing donations to the scholarship fund with Recognitions for every member. President Brittany reminded the club of the Pack-the-House social the following day at Los Rancheros.
School Resource Officer Josh Radliff stood and gave an excellent program about the Teen Police Academy. The club learned about the activities that junior high and high school students take part in for a week each summer, what topics first responders teach, who donates food to these hungry students, and the importance of this program. The club also learned about Radcliff's career, how it all led to making sure kids cross the street safely to Jacksonville Middle School every day that school is in session, what equipment he carries on the job, his duties as an SRO, other training he has as a police officer and how that aided in recent events, and more. After answering numerous questions, SRO Radliff accepted an appreciative round of applause.
President Brittany rang the meeting to a close at 7:56 a.m. The next meeting will be at 7 a.m. May 19 in the back room of Rudi's Grill. All guests and visiting Rotarians are welcome.
Upcoming events:
-Scholarships Awarded - May

Rotary Club of Jacksonville
President Kelly Pool called the May 15 meeting to order at noon at Hamilton's. We recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang one verse of "America."
Kim Brogdon gave the Reflection.
Kelly thanked today's volunteers, including Dan Lepper, (double duty), Karen Walker, Jan Ryan, Ginny Fanning, Alberta Robinson, Jim McClary, Lynne Sheaff, Craig Albers, Diane Seufert (double duty) and Kim Brodgon.
Kim welcomed our guests, including visiting Rotarian Tommy Ekdahl, who is from a Stockholm club but, most importantly, is Tobbe's grandfather. Other guests included Yvonne Ekdahl, Tobbe's grandmother; Alice Ekdahl, Tobbe's aunt; Charlotte, Tobbe's niece; our speaker, Alex Lansaw; and his mom, Susan. A song of welcome was sung. Dan also led us in another song.
Scott Boston called to order the Rotary Club of Jacksonville Foundation meeting. He presented a motion from the foundation board to update the bylaws as follows:
1. Article 4, Section 3: announce the board candidates ONCE at one of the June meetings, not at every meeting, as the bylaws currently require.
2. Clean up the name of the foundation to read Rotary Club of Jacksonville consistently throughout the document. This was seconded by Keith Lape and passed unanimously.
The foundation meeting was adjourned and the club meeting resumed.
Karen Walker gave a Rotary Minute reminding us we will present Paul Harris awards on June 12. The materials have been ordered. Circle members must find someone to introduce the awardee and ensure the awardee will be present. Let Kim B. know how many people will be coming so she can order enough lunch.
Announcements:
-Noel Beard requested help with transportation for Tobbe.
-Bill Blue (Community Service Committee) requested volunteers for Summerfest, which will be from 4 to 6 p.m. June 10 at Community Park.
-Dan Lepper announced that the Ferris wheel permit was approved and we are ready to go. The committee still needs someone to get the volunteers signed up to run the wheel.
-Lynne reminded us to pay our 2026-27 dues. So far, 38 have paid; at least four are not rejoining, which leaves about 47 still to pay.
-Alberta passed around a sign-up sheet for volunteering at Juneteenth.
Craig Albers led Rotations, since there were no Recognitions. Rotations were given by Lynne; Noel, who issued another PolioPlus challenge; Craig; Bertie and Kelly.
Kim introduced our speaker, Alex Lansaw, who talked about his hobby-turned-business of refurbishing tornado warning siren systems. A very impressive speaker and project.
Jim McClarey drew unsuccessfully for the 50-50 drawing of $10.
We adjourned the meeting with the Four-Way Test.

Jacksonville Area Landlord Association
Taylor Sweeting, program manager for Jacksonville Area Center for Independent Living, was the guest speaker during the May meeting of Jacksonville Area Landlord Association. JACIL serves people with disabilities in Morgan, Scott, Cass and Mason counties to promote independent living, skills training and community participation.
Taylor's presentation helped JALA members be more aware of resources available for their tenants should the need arise. Dara Fogelsang and Mike McKean were the winners of the door prizes provided by The Home Depot.
JALA's next meeting will be on June 9 with Kevin Heitz, vice president and loan officer from First National Bank of Jacksonville, presenting. New members are encouraged to attend. No invitation is required. JALA members meet under the Grandstand at the Morgan County Fairgrounds at 6 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month, with a 5:30 p.m. social, to discuss topics involved in property rentals, repairs, and real estate investing. For more information, visit the JALA website at jville4rent.net.
