Car hits 5 Chicago police officers clearing West Side crowd

Five Chicago police officers were injured early Sunday when a vehicle drove into a crowd of officers clearing a large gathering on the city’s Near West Side.

At around 3:20 a.m., authorities were dispersing a large crowd at the 1200 block of South Loomis Street when a blue sedan, traveling westbound in the eastbound lane, struck the officers and drove over a curb before crashing into a Chicago Police Department cruiser, a fence and a pole, according to police.

The driver of the sedan, identified by police as an 18-year-old male, was not injured and was taken into custody at the scene. Police also reported recovering a weapon from the offender's vehicle.

All five injured officers were taken to nearby hospitals and are listed in fair condition. No other injuries have been reported, and charges against the driver are pending.
