Leclaire Elementary teacher wins Madison Communications award

May 23-Jessie Buehnerkemper, a Leclaire Elementary School kindergarten teacher, was one of Madison Communications' top three winners in its 2026 Teacher of the Year contest.

"I truly cannot thank everyone enough for the votes, encouragement, and support that helped make this happen," Buehnerkemper said. "My smile has been so big ever since hearing the news!"

Buehnerkemper received $500 for classroom use, a custom-engraved glass book Teacher of the Year trophy and a classroom pizza party hosted by the Madison Communications marketing team.

Shes plan to use the money to buy a new classroom rug and possibly buy supplies for themed learning days like Dino Day, Pirate Day.

"I'd also love to use the money to create even more magical experiences for all of Leclaire Kindergarten to enjoy together," Buehnerkemper said.

Her nomination reflects the joy of learning that she brings to Leclaire.

"Mrs. B has taught two of my children, and she is the most patient and loving teacher," Buehnerkemper's nomination said. "My kids have thrived in her classroom. She has a special way of teaching that brings out the best in her students. She has a heart of gold and is so passionate about teaching. She fully deserves all the recognition."

The Teacher of the Year contest recognizes outstanding educators throughout the communities Madison Communications serves.

The 21st annual Teacher of the Year contest marked the biggest year in the program's history, with a record 29,026 votes from local schools and communities.

The contest takes place annually from March 1 through May 1 and is divided into nomination and voting phases. In March, Madison Communications received 263 teacher nominations. Voting took place throughout April, and awards were given out in May.

One of the most meaningful aspects of the Teacher of the Year program continues to be the nominations submitted by students, parents, administrators, coworkers and community members.

Other Edwardsville Nominations

Other Edwardsville nominations reflected the broad reach of District 7 educators across elementary and middle schools, with 29 additional teachers were nominated for the Madison County Communication's teach of the Year Contest.

At Liberty Middle School alone, 14 teachers were nominated, with students and parents repeatedly highlighting educators who balance academic rigor with emotional support and relationship-building.

Several nominations emphasized the lasting personal impact teachers make outside the classroom. Hamel Elementary teacher Abby Trask was recognized after creating a custom book to help explain a family health crisis to one student, with the nominator calling her care "far beyond what I have ever seen in a teacher."

Elementary school nominations frequently focused on teachers' ability to build confidence and create welcoming classroom environments for young learners. Midway Elementary first grade teacher Chelsea Phipps was credited with helping a student grow "academically by leaps and bounds," while also incorporating lessons from her experiences teaching in China and celebrating cultural traditions such as Chinese New Year.

Parents and students also highlighted teachers who go beyond academics to help children feel safe, valued and understood. Lincoln Middle School teacher Jennifer Breaux was described as "more of an angel than a teacher" who ensures every student feels "safe and heard," while Worden Elementary teacher Patty Odom was praised for creating personalized projects, encouraging reading incentives and even placing family photos on students' name tags so children could "have a piece of home at school."

Multiple nominations pointed to teachers' dedication outside normal school hours. N.O. Nelson Elementary teacher Julie Frank was recognized for arriving at school by 7:30 a.m. and often staying until 4:30 p.m., while Liberty Middle School wrestling coach and teacher Sean Mead was praised for spending "countless evenings and weekends" supporting student-athletes.

Mrs. Kyro is an exceptional first grade teacher who makes learning engaging for all of her students. She does a fantastic job teaching the curriculum while also helping young students develop important social and emotional skills. She communicates effectively and builds strong relationships not only with her students, but with parents as well. She is active in the community and consistently goes out of her way to make students feel special. We feel very fortunate to have had Mrs. Kyro as our son's first grade teacher this year, as he has learned so much and gained confidence because of her. She is truly deserving of this recognition.

Abby Trask

Miss Abby is an amazing teacher who gives her students exceptional personal attention. Our family is going through a health crisis, and she created a book for my granddaughter to help explain what her father is experiencing. Her thoughtfulness and care go far beyond what I have ever seen in a teacher. We are deeply grateful for Miss Abby and all that she does.

LeClaire Elementary

Janna Beckmann

I am proud to nominate this incredible kindergarten teacher for Teacher of the Year. She is the true definition of kindness, always putting her students first and doing whatever it takes to help each child succeed. Her dedication shines through in everything she does, from creating a warm, welcoming classroom environment to finding creative ways to meet the unique needs of every learner. She genuinely loves her job, and it shows in the joy, patience, and enthusiasm she brings each day. Her fun-spirited personality makes learning exciting and engaging, while her unwavering commitment ensures her students feel supported, valued, and inspired. She is not only an outstanding educator but also a positive force in the lives of her students and colleagues.

Kylee Kuba

Mrs. Kuba is an outstanding teacher who is deeply dedicated to her job and brings enthusiasm to school each day. She is passionate about her students and takes a genuine interest in their lives, showing care and respect to everyone she meets. She goes out of her way to help others and serves as a strong inspiration, especially for students who hope to become teachers themselves. Her commitment and positive impact make her truly deserving of this award. I am especially grateful for everything she does, both as a teacher and as someone who means so much to me.

Liberty Middle School

Melissa Banker

I am nominating Mrs. Banker because she is always there for me, and if I need help with anything, she is willing to help even if that subject is not her strong suit. She always keeps us in line and will not tolerate disrespect toward anyone, including herself.

Kelli Bruce

Out of all the teachers I've had during my time at Liberty, it's rare to find a teacher, whether for a core class or an elective, who is as helpful and fun as Ms. Bruce. I want a teacher who can actually help me learn while not being overly strict and still maintaining a fun attitude, and Ms. Bruce does that really well. Sometimes I have teachers who help me learn but are too strict, and other times I have teachers who are more relaxed but I don't learn as much. Ms. Bruce is the perfect balance between the two. I can walk into her class and genuinely learn something while also having fun. I'm also not a fan of social studies, so for a teacher to actually make me enjoy it says a lot.

Peggy Emling

She is an amazing teacher who really cares for her students. She is great at teaching and is the only teacher I have ever felt like I can be completely myself around.

Amanda Gibson

Amanda is the choir and Act One teacher at Liberty Middle School. If you ask any of her students the difference she has made in their lives, the answer would come instantly. Beyond teaching and promoting fine arts, she is a strong support system for her students. Middle school is a time when many students begin to struggle both personally and academically, and they go through so many changes. They know they can always come to her when they need guidance, a place to decompress, or even just a hug. The plays and performances she puts on are also top-notch. She is not afraid to challenge her students with music they have never been exposed to or performances they may have thought were impossible for middle school. Music teachers often do not receive the recognition they deserve, and Amanda is truly one of the best.

Anna Harris

She is very good at what she does and has become my favorite teacher. I am always happy to see her, and I learn so much from her.

Timothy Heffington

He is by far the best teacher I have ever had. He truly deserves this for all the effort he puts into helping us become better students.

Mary Hughes

I am nominating Mrs. Hughes because she is very kind and fun. She is always there to help me when I am feeling sad or not feeling well, and she makes me feel supported and cared for. Even though I no longer have a class with her, I still visit her whenever I can because she is so welcoming. She is a great teacher who truly makes a difference in her students' lives.

Diana Kamadulski

I am nominating this teacher because she is very understanding and makes learning enjoyable. She creates a positive classroom environment that makes it the part of the day I look forward to most. She explains the material in a clear and manageable way, which helps students feel confident in their work. If I ever run into a problem, Mrs. K is someone I know I can go to. She is a great listener and always offers honest and helpful advice, making her a truly great teacher.

Ed McDaniel

Science can often feel like a collection of abstract facts, but Mr. McDaniel has a unique ability to turn the classroom into a place of discovery. Whether he is explaining complex biological systems or guiding hands-on experiments, his enthusiasm is contagious. He meets every student where they are and ensures that no one is left behind, helping everyone feel capable and confident. Beyond the lesson plans, he is a mentor who genuinely cares about his students' growth. He creates an environment where it is safe to ask questions, where mistakes are seen as opportunities to learn, and where curiosity is encouraged. His dedication and kindness have made science the highlight of our day. Mr. McDaniel does not just teach us how the world works, he inspires us to be the ones who improve it.

Sean Mead

He works incredibly hard in both his classroom and with the wrestling team. He dedicates countless evenings and weekends throughout the season to supporting and coaching his athletes. He takes the time to work with each student individually, making sure they understand the techniques and what they need to do to improve. His dedication, commitment, and willingness to go the extra mile are why I chose to nominate him.

Travis Pate

This teacher makes students excited to come to class and knows how to make his lessons engaging and interesting. His approach helps students enjoy learning while understanding the material.

Katie Sok

I feel that she is a friend I can talk to about anything, no matter the situation. She teaches in a way that is relatable and approachable, making students feel comfortable and supported in the classroom.

Deanne Sommer

She goes above and beyond every day to support her students. She takes the time to help me understand assignments and ensures I truly grasp the material instead of just completing the work. She greets everyone with kindness and positivity, creating a welcoming and comfortable classroom. This year, I have learned so much from her-not just academically, but also about responsibility, organization, and confidence. She explains lessons clearly, provides helpful examples, and is patient whenever I have questions, encouraging me to try my best and reminding me that mistakes are part of learning. Her positive attitude and calm support make a big difference, even on stressful days. She notices when students are struggling, offers help immediately, celebrates successes, and pushes us to reach our full potential. She creates an environment where everyone feels respected and included. Because of her, I feel more confident and motivated, and I am truly grateful for her dedication and care every single day.

Kyra Wade

I am nominating Ms. Wade because she does more than just explain lessons. She inspires students to think critically, grow, and believe in themselves.

Lincoln Middle School

Steph Beatty

She is always positive and serious about her work and helps each of us when we need it. She has to work with a lot of students and does her best to help everyone she can.

Jennifer Breaux

She is the sweetest person I have ever met and is genuinely more of an angel than a teacher. She always puts her students before herself and makes sure each and every one of them feels safe and heard. She is like a school mom to all of her students, myself included. Overall, she is the best person I have ever met and truly deserves the world and more.

Jordan Nunn

Mr. Nunn is a very fun and engaging teacher who makes class enjoyable for his students. He genuinely cares about them, taking the time to check in on their daily lives. Beyond teaching, he is a great dad and coach, and his love of March Madness and sports adds to his relatable, friendly presence. He connects with students in a way that makes him feel more like a friend while still being an outstanding educator.

Maggie Patton

I am nominating this teacher because she is always kind and makes learning fun. She is understanding, supportive, and willing to help her students whenever they need it. Overall, she is a wonderful teacher who makes a positive impact every day.

Amy Spears

I am nominating Mrs. Spears because she is an excellent teacher. She is not only kind but also teaches math very effectively. This year, I have learned math faster than in any previous year, thanks to her guidance and support.

Kristin Towell

Mrs. Towell helps every student and finds different ways to make sure we understand the material. She has helped me improve my comprehension and makes learning fun. She is kind, supportive, and truly an amazing teacher.

Rachel Tucker

Ms. Tucker is a kind and caring teacher who enjoys helping students with assignments. She is funny, stylish, and supportive, and she genuinely celebrates when students are thriving and doing well. She is the best teacher I have ever had, which is why I proudly nominate Ms. Tucker.

Midway Elementary School

Chelsea Phipps

My daughter Shelby has grown academically by leaps and bounds in first grade, and Mrs. Phipps has played a huge role in that growth. She has prepared Shelby exceptionally well for second grade by providing valuable tools in reading and math, going above and beyond what is required. Shelby feels valued and appreciated in Mrs. Phipps' classroom, which has become a home away from home. Mrs. Phipps brings enthusiasm and care to her teaching, sharing her life experiences from teaching in China and celebrating cultural events like the Chinese New Year, which Shelby talked about for a week. She keeps parents informed by sharing Shelby's accomplishments and thoughtful moments from class. Shelby consistently says she loves her teacher and considers her the best, which is a testament to the love, support, and encouragement Mrs. Phipps provides. She has made a lasting positive impact on my daughter's education and life, and she truly deserves to be recognized for her dedication and care.

N.O. Nelson Elementary

Julie Frank

Mrs. Frank always has her students' best interests in mind and wants every child to be successful. She is usually at school by 7:30 and doesn't leave until 4:30 most days. She is always prepared and dedicated to her students.

Worden Elementary School

Patty Odom

Mrs. Odom is kind, supportive, empathetic, and thoughtful. She encourages our daughter to do her best and creates special projects to challenge her and keep her engaged in learning. She provides multiple incentives each month for reading and goes above and beyond to create a supportive classroom environment, even including family pictures on students' name tags so they have a piece of home at school. She allows flexibility and student choice, making our daughter feel valued and special. We are very grateful for Mrs. Odom and deeply appreciate the quality instruction and care she provides.
