St. Clair, Madison counties report 108 new COVID-19 cases, no new deaths
Southwestern Illinois reported a total of 133 new positive tests but no new deaths Tuesday.
St. Clair County had the highest case count with 59, while Madison County reported 49 new cases. Other southwestern Illinois counties reporting new cases Tuesday included Perry County with 7 new cases, Jersey County with 5 new cases, Randolph County with 2 new cases, and Washington County with 1 new case.
The state’s public health agency defines the metro-east as St. Clair, Madison, Monroe, Randolph, Clinton, Bond and Washington counties.
The metro-east reported a 7.3% positivity rate for the seven-day period from July 25 to July 31, according to the most recent data available on the state’s regional metrics website. If the metro-east reaches an 8% positivity rate and stays there for three days, restrictions could be imposed by the state to help slow the spread of the virus.
The metro-east’s rate stood at a 7.7% for most of the weekend. According to IDPH, as of Tuesday, 45% of the metro-east’s ICU beds are currently in use and 10% of ventilators are being used.
St. Clair County’s latest rundown
St. Clair County now has 4,074 coronavirus cases and 155 deaths related to the virus, leading the metro-east in both categories. However, the county saw a couple positive trends Tuesday, as the 59 new cases are down from 108 on Monday.
Additionally, the county saw its daily positivity rate plummet to 4.2% on Tuesday from 10.3% on Monday. The positivity rate is the percentage of coronavirus tests that are positive among those tests taken.
On the down side, the county announced 58 people are currently hospitalized due to COVID-19, the highest amount for the county since June 4. Three of those people are on ventilators.
Two ZIP codes in the county that had the largest increases Tuesday were 62221 (Belleville — +9 for a total of 361) and 62208 (Fairview Heights — +7 for a total of 261).
Cases reported Tuesday in St. Clair County ranged in age from young people in their teens to people in their 90s. This included 11 young people in their teens, 14 people in their 20s, 6 people in their 30s and 9 people in their 40s. The county has a 7-day rolling average of 69 cases. per day.
“Those hospitalizations are another metric we have to watch,” said St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency Director Herb Simmons during the county’s daily briefing. “Please, like I said, wear your mask, wash your hands, watch your social distancing. I promise we’ll get through this. We just need everyone working together.”
Madison County by the numbers
Madison County, meanwhile, now has 2,254 new coronavirus cases and 73 deaths.
Two ZIP codes in the county that had the largest increases Tuesday were 62224 (Collinsville, Pontoon Beach, State Park Place — +11 for a total of 262) and 62002 (Alton, East Alton, Godfrey — +9 for a total of 304).
Cases Tuesday ranged in young people under 10 to people in their 80s, including 8 cases of people in their 20s, 8 cases of people in their 30s, and 10 cases of people in their 40s.
The county also reported a daily positivity rate of 8.42%, and its 7-day moving average positivity rate is 7.17%. The county has a 7-day rolling average of 50 cases per day.
Numbers update from Illinois
Meanwhile, the state announced 1,471 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday and 19 additional virus-related deaths.
Illinois has seen a total of 7,545 deaths during the pandemic as of Monday, officials reported. A total of 184,712 people have been diagnosed with the coronavirus, while more than 2.8 million people have been tested for COVID-19, 42,598 of which were tested since Monday.
Currently, 1,496 people in Illinois are in the hospital with COVID-19, and of those patients, 365 are in the ICU and 125 patients are on ventilators.
As of Tuesday, the statewide, seven-day preliminary positivity rate from July 28-Aug. 3 was 3.9%.
