The Belleville Kmart is sponsoring a community safety day next Saturday on the store’s parking lot.
The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24 at 7230 Westfield Plaza Drive in Belleville.
Annette Tim, executive assistant to St. Clair County Sheriff Richard Watson, said she is looking forward to families coming out with their children.
“It will be a fun event, but also a learning event. We will have Belleville firemen on hand with the Belleville smoke house,” she said.
Families will learn what they are supposed to do in case of fire. A finger-printing person will be on hand to finger-print children.
Members of the Belleville Police Department, the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department, St. Clair County 911, the St. Clair County Health Department, the County Emergency Service, Illinois State Police and more will be a part of the event.
There also will be rockclimbing for children.
“It’s going to be a great time. We will give away some toys and other small items. Families will be given information pertaining to health and safety,” Tim said.
She added, “There will be games for the children, a helicopter will land on the parking lot, and it’s sure to delight the children. At the end of the day, we hope families leave better prepared to deal with their health and safety. We want them to know that the police and firemen and all first-responders are here for them.”
Tim, who runs the St. Clair County Jail’s Scared Straight Program, will be in attendance, along with other officers from the program.
“The goal with this program is to show young people why they do not want to go to jail and if they make a bad choice ... how they will end up,” Tim said. “We will also have a Survival Flight Medical Helicopter landing at 10 a.m. and Wheels of Freedom will provide barbecue for purchase while supplies last.”
Individuals from Bank of America, USA Martial Arts, and the U.S. Veterans Foundation will also be in attendance.
