On scene at head-on, two-vehicle collision along Route 4
Five people were taken to area hospitals on Saturday after a head-on crash along Route 4, south of Mascoutah, Fayetteville Fire Department officials said.
Emergency personnel were called to Route 4, between Rustic Pine Road and Karch Road about 3:55 p.m., after a Fiat 500X going north collided with a Chevy Cavalier going south on Route 4, according to Fayetteville Fire Chief Randy Vasquez.
There were four people in the Fiat and one person in the Chevy, Vasquez said.
All five people were transported for medical attention. Both drivers were taken via helicopter to St. Louis University Hospital. The three passengers in the Fiat were taken by ambulance to St. Elizabeth’s, officials said.
Vasquez said the injuries appeared to be non-life threatening, and all five people were conscious and breathing at the scene. Airbags were deployed in the vehicles.
Trooper Calvin Dye Jr. of the Illinois State Police said the Chevy crossed over into the northbound lanes for unknown reasons before colliding head on with the Fiat.
Illinois State Police is still investigating the crash, Dye said.
Vasquez said there was an extensive extrication on the Fiat, which had its roof cut open by rescue personnel. The Chevy ended up on its roof after the crash.
Firefighters from Mascoutah also responded to the crash.
