A series of traffic crashes involving 10 vehicles backed up westbound traffic on Illinois 15 on Tuesday morning.
The Illinois State Police reported that four separate multi-vehicle crashes were reported on an Illinois 15 overpass over Freeburg Avenue at 7:20 a.m. The crashes happened in the eastbound lanes of Illinois 15. Traffic is down to one lane in both directions at that area for bridge construction work being done on the regular westbound lanes.
Trooper Calvin Dye Jr. said one person failed to reduce speed while traveling on the bridge, which resulted in the driver to rear-ending. That vehicle then hit another vehicle. Dye said that crash started a chain reaction of crashes behind it, with three other multi-vehicle crashes taking place. Dye said no one was injured in the crashes.
Dye said construction workers were working at the time, but no one was injured as they were not near the crash scenes.
Traffic was redirected through the area while the scene was cleared. Traffic flow was affected for more than two hours.
