Body found, baby rescued after vehicle goes into lake; connection to Glen Carbon fire probed

The body of a Glen Carbon woman was pulled Thursday from Silver Lake near Highland, a few hours after a paramedic rescued a baby from her partially-submerged vehicle.

The body of the driver, Cristy Campbell, 32, of Glen Carbon, was pulled from the lake about 1:15 p.m. Her vehicle went into the water while firefighters were battling a blaze at her home, which resulted in one fatality.

The vehicle went into Highland Silver Lake at about 5:30 a.m. Thursday near Illinois 143, which runs along the dam’s edge.

A paramedic jumped into the lake and pulled the baby from the vehicle. The baby then was flown to a St. Louis hospital. The baby was expected to be released from the hospital on Friday, according to authorities.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Department was handling the crash, which authorities believe is connected to the fatal house fire in Glen Carbon.

The vehicle apparently went around a house and then into a lake. A passerby noticed the vehicle’s lights and called 911.

Illinois Department of Natural Resources officers with a sonar-equipped boat were called to search the lake. Police officers with dogs swept the nearby woods as well.

Crews were able to pull the vehicle from the lake. The sport-utility vehicle appeared to be a silver or gray Nissan Armada.
