Police believe car crashed into Swansea ditch after medical emergency

A man landed in a ditch after a single-vehicle accident at the intersection of Fullerton Road and Illinois 159 Thursday evening.

Swansea Police Chief Steve Johnson said the driver, a male in his 60s, lost control of his Dodge Stratus after what Johnson believed to be a medical emergency.

Johnson said the car spun around the intersection before crashing. Police had to call the fire department to make sure it was safe to remove the man from the vehicle, which was slanted on a small hill.

The man, whose identity has not yet been released, had no substantial injuries, Johnson said.

Misty Bagwell said she narrowly avoided getting hit by the driver of the Stratus. She was stopped at a red light and saw the car hit a median in front of the Walgreens across the street, then back up and run into a curb. A cop behind the Stratus turned his lights on, and the driver “gunned it” and went straight into the ditch, Bagwell said.

“It got some air time,” Bagwell said. “At least he didn’t hit nobody else.”
