Kindergarteners treat moms to Mother's Day 'spa day'
Come on, a spa day put on by kindergarteners? This could be the cutest Mother Day’s celebration ever!
From sugar scrubs and manicures to facials and massages, three kindergarten classes at New Baden Elementary School pampered their mothers’ from head to toe Friday morning in the school’s cafeteria.
For about an hour-and-a-half, kindergarten teacher Katie Mense smiled as her students and fellow teachers indulged in an idea that she dreamed up after growing tired of construction paper and macaroni Mother’s Day cards.
“I wanted to do something that would be meaningful,” Mense said. “I’ve been teaching for 13 years, and I’ve done all the crafts and cookbooks. I love doing that stuff, but you just wonder what happens to all of those things.”
That’s how the idea for a “Mommy Spa Day” was born.
Mense said creating a long-lasting memory has turned out to be a valuable gift for parents and students at New Baden Elementary.
Moms show up in robes and slippers ready to relax. The students share hors d’oeuvres, cookies and lemonade with their moms. There was even a photo station for the special day.
“The kids love it,” Mense said. “They are just so proud that they can do this for their moms.”
More than 60 kindergarteners and their parents participated in the spa day this year. The day went well, but each time the school puts on a spa day Mense learns a few dos and don’ts.
“One year, we had a kid put lotion in his mom’s hair,” Mense said. Now teachers “always explain to the kids how everything is used” before the spa day.
Mother’s Day is really special because it’s not just a chance for the kids to enjoy their moms; it’s a chance for moms to enjoy their kids and families.
Mom Mistie Denny
Lily Youngless had plenty of practice with nail polish. She gently painted her mother’s nails with what she called “ice cream purple nail polish.”
Carly Youngless giggled at the name, then smiled when her daughter called her “the best.”
Kindergarten mom Michelle Ferris, and her daughter, Ava Ferris, enjoyed the massage station along side Tammy West, and her daughter, ReAnna West.
The girls soaked in the fun, but kindergarten boys enjoyed pampering their moms, too.
An energetic Miles Denny gave his mom, Mistie Denny, a facial during the spa day. Miles also added neon hair extensions to complete his mom’s spa day-look.
When asked why he loved his mother Miles quickly said “because she is beautiful.”
His mom blushed.
“I think it’s about making memories,” Mistie Denny said. “It’s a time for us to bond. This is a memory that will keep in the history of our family forever. Mother’s Day is really special because it’s not just a chance for the kids to enjoy their moms; it’s a chance for moms to enjoy their kids and families.”
