Police were investigating the shooting death of a 34-year-old man who was found dead on Union Street after 4 a.m. Sunday morning.
Alton Police Department officers responded to the 900 block of Union Street to a report of gunshots at approximately 4:13 a.m., Lt. Jarrett Ford said in a news release.
Officers found Derrance G. Taylor lying in the road. He died from “obvious gunshot wound injuries,” police said. Authorities released Taylor’s name Sunday afternoon.
The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis, the region’s homicide task force, was activated to investigate the death.
More than 25 investigators were working on the investigation Sunday, said Madison County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Kristopher Tharp, deputy commander for the Major Case Squad.
“We’re actively pursuing leads to bring this case to a close,” Tharp said. “We’re doing all we can to bring justice to this matter.”
