In the next year, internet retailer Amazon plans to hire 2,000 people in Illinois.
WGN Chicago reported those positions will translate a 40 percent increase in Amazon jobs within the state.
The Chicago Sun-Times spoke with Amazon’s recruitment director Kathleen Carroll and reported that the additional hiring will bring the number of Illinois Amazon employees to around 7,000.
According to the company’s website, Amazon operates five fulfillment centers in Edwardsville, Joliet and Romeoville.
The Edwardsville centers are located Gateway and Lakeview commerce centers — west of Interstate 255, north of I-270 and straddle Illinois 111.
The centers, which employ approximately 1,000 people, span more than 700,000 square feet each. Employees pick, pack and ship items for customers at these locations.
The internet retailer, with a market value of nearly $250 billion, did receive a tax credit in 2015.
An addition four fulfillment centers are under construction in Monee, Aurora and Waukegan, according to the company’s website.
