A 72-year-old man from Granite City died Wednesday morning in a crash on westbound Interstate 64, according to Illinois State Police.

Danny Hillis died in the crash that occurred near Silver Creek shortly after 8 a.m.

Hillis was driving a 2011 Ford Crown Victoria and was the only occupant of that vehicle. A preliminary investigation indicates Hillis may have suffered a medical emergency while driving.

No other injuries were reported.

The preliminary investigation indicated Hillis’ vehicle struck a tractor-trailer and then struck a third vehicle.

An Illinois State Police accident reconstruction trooper was called to the crash along with a commercial motor vehicle trooper to inspect the tractor-trailer.

The crash occurred at mile-marker 21.5, police said.

Mascoutah and Lebanon police departments also responded to the crash.
