Candidate sought for open seat on Madison County Board

A candidate is wanted to fill longtime Madison County Board member Helen Hawkins’ seat.

Hawkins, D-Granite City, has resigned from the board after being appointed to the Metro-East Sanitary District Board. She has served on the board since 2002, representing portions of Granite City, South Roxana, Hartford, Mitchell and Pontoon Beach. She is also a longtime clerk for Nameoki Township.

Board Chairman Kurt Prenzler must nominate a replacement for Hawkins within 60 days. The new board member must be a Democrat — the same party as Hawkins — and will serve out the remainder of Hawkins’ term, which is to expire in December 2018. The candidate must be a registered voter in Hawkins’ district.

Anyone interested in the position should submit a resume and cover letter explaining their interest, either by mail or via email at The deadline is June 15.
