Coroner IDs men who died in head-on crash on Eads Bridge

An early morning head on collision on the Eads Bridge on Wednesday claimed the lives of two men, one from Illinois and one from Missouri. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. identified the man as Desmond T. Phipps, 42, of Centreville, and Nicholas F. Fiore, 25, Ballwin, Mo.

East St. Louis police and St. Louis police and the fire departments from both cities responded to the scene.

East St. Louis Captain Bobby Cole said East St. Louis police received a call reporting the accident on the Eads Bridge at 12:35 a.m.

“When officers arrived on scene, they found two vehicles, a 2002 Chevrolet Malibu and a 2012 Hyundai Veloster in the middle of the bridge,” Cole said.

One man from the Malibu and one from the Veloster were extricated by the fire departments, Cole said. The Malibu was traveling west and the Veloster was traveling east on the bridge.

A passenger in the Malibu, who was not identified by police, remains in critical condition at an area hospital, according to Cole.

An Illinois State Crime Scene technician was on scene and typically it takes between six and eight weeks for results to return.

The crash remains under investigation, Cole said.
