One woman died in a house fire in Bethalto on Tuesday, according to the Bethalto Fire Department.
Dispatchers received the 911 call at 6:59 p.m., but when they arrived at the 700 block of Oak Ridge, the structure was too dangerous to enter.
“We couldn’t go in; the house was just engulfed in flames,” Fire Chief Alex Campbell said.
Meadowbrook, Cottage Hills and Rosewood fire departments assisted in putting out the fire. Once it was extinguished, firefighters entered and found that a woman had died in the house. Campbell said they believe the woman lived alone, and her family arrived at the scene after the fire was put out.

For Campbell and his crew, it was a tough call to take. Campbell said it was his first fatal fire as the chief.
“It’s tough, but our guys are very professional, and we’re very open with each other, so no one holds anything inside,” Campbell said. “We go back to work after it’s done.”
