An East St. Louis man shot another man three times — in the torso, abdomen and chest — police say.

Leland January, 52, now faces three charges of aggravated battery and discharge of a firearm, one charge of aggravated discharge of a firearm and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. He is accused of shooting Calvert L. Gamble on April 29. Gamble survived the shooting.

If convicted, January could face six to 30 years in prison and a fine up to $25,000.

January’s case will go through the grand jury, which means a group of jurors will issue formal charges against him. Their goal is to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to charge January.
