A Belleville man has been accused of killing a 23-year-old Cahokia man over the weekend.
Christopher A. Nettles, 23, was charged with murder Tuesday in connection with the death of Diondre D. Shanklin. Nettles’ bond was set at $750,000.
Police found Shanklin lying in the road just after 11 p.m. Friday in front of 43 St. Ambrose in Cahokia, according to a news release. The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis was called in around 3 a.m. Saturday to investigate Shanklin’s death.
Investigators had few leads to work with, as family and friends didn’t know who Shanklin may have been with in the hours leading up to his death.

Fifteen investigators from the Major Case Squad investigated Shanklin’s death, putting more than 1,000 hours of manpower into the investigation.
“Many departments had two officers assigned to Major Case Squad call outs at the same time during this time period, not only to this investigation, but to the call out in East Alton,” said Deputy Commander Bruce Fleshren in a news release. “This stretches resources, but is a tribute to the dedication of member agencies and officers willing to continue the great tradition of the Greater St. Louis Major Case Squad.”
