East St. Louis police officer injured in six-vehicle crash
Six cars were involved in an accident Tuesday evening that injured an East St. Louis police officer.
Police were initially investigating a fender bender on Illinois 15 near 26th Street.
Shortly after, police received a call about an erratic driver on Illinois 15 near 29th Street, Capt. Bobby Cole said.
The erratic driver, who was in a dark pickup truck, sped up before striking a black car that was stopped at a red light and an officer’s car that was positioned behind the two-car fender bender, to the side of the road.
The truck hit the tail end of the squad car so hard that it fishtailed and hit a different black car that was initially involved in the fender bender, and a green pickup truck that was parked in a field to the side of the road. The driver of the green pickup was there to give a ride to one of the motorists involved in the inital fender bender.
The police officer, whose identity was not immediately provided, was taken to a local hospital to receive treatment. Cole did not know the officer’s condition but said he “got hit pretty good.”
The man driving the pickup was taken to a St. Louis area hospital for treatment. He and the officer were the only two injured in the crash.
Cole said the driver of the pickup was having “some sort of medical issue,” but he was not able to say what kind.
