The driver of a car that collided with a pole and burst into flames in Alton on Thursday has died.

The driver, whose identity was not yet released as of Friday, was 37 and from St. Louis, according to Alton police. He and a 10-year-old passenger were originally taken to a St. Louis hospital, and the 10-year-old boy was being scheduled for transfer to a special burn unit in Cincinnati on Friday afternoon, Alton police said.

The driver and passenger were alive when firefighters arrived. Firefighters rescued them from the burning car shortly after 1:20 p.m, Fire Chief Bernie Sebold said.

The accident occurred in a parking lot near the intersection of Landmarks Boulevard and Ridge Street.
