Excessive heat warning ends Sunday evening, but another wave could come Wednesday

Though an excessive heat warning ends Sunday evening, dangerous heat index values between 105 and 110 degrees are expected to return to much of the area on Wednesday afternoon and early evening, according to the National Weather Service in St. Louis.

The forecast for the metro-east from the National Weather Service:

Today ... Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before 8 a.m. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 98. Heat index values as high as 104. Northwest wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent.

Tonight ... A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms between 8 p.m. and 1 a.m. Mostly clear, with a low around 72. Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.

Monday ... Sunny, with a high near 91. North wind 3 to 5 mph.

Monday Night ... Mostly clear, with a low around 72. North wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Tuesday ... Sunny, with a high near 94. Calm wind becoming east around 5 mph in the afternoon.

Tuesday Night ... Mostly clear, with a low around 76.

Wednesday ... Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 99.

Wednesday Night ... A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 77.

Thursday ... A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 91.

Thursday Night ... A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 2 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 71.
