A 70-year-old taxi driver shot and killed his passenger early Sunday morning in self-defense after an argument, according to the St. Louis County Police Department.

The driver shot 48-year-old Ahmad Saramah, who was riding in the back seat of the taxi minivan about 1 a.m. in the area of east Interstate 70 and Jennings Station Road, police stated in a news release. Saramah was from the 8400 block of Bayberry Drive in St. Louis.

The driver told police he was “in fear of his life” when he shot Saramah, the release stated. The two did not know one another before the man got into the taxi as a customer, according to Sgt. Shawn McGuire.

Police took the driver into custody, but said he was cooperating with authorities. Police did not release the driver’s name.
