St. Louis County police tweet out this photo of a police car damaged by several bullets during a fatal offcer-involved shooting Monday morning on Interstate 55.

Police say officers killed a man who reportedly ran a car off the road around 9 a.m. Monday, held several people offering him help at gunpoint and drove off in someone else’s car on southbound Interstate 55 near Interstate 270.

The man was wielding a shotgun and a handgun when he pointed them at the man and his family looking to help the suspect with his crashed car, according to a release from Sgt. Shawn McGuire.

He reportedly carjacked their car and drove southbound on I-55 as officers attempted to stop his vehicle three times with stop sticks.

Eventually, the car came to a stop near exit 170 in Festus. At that point, McGuire wrote, officers exchanged shots with the man.

He was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting.

Several agencies were involved in the pursuit and investigation including the Tactical Operations Unit, Jefferson County SWAT, Festus police, Missouri State Highway Police and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the shooting.

KMOV reported that I-55 near Route 61 in Jefferson County was closed in both directions.
