East St. Louis matriarch, newspaper publisher dies

A longtime leader in the East St. Louis community and newspaper publisher died Sunday.

Anne Elizabeth Jordan, 81, was the wife of well-known East St. Louis politician Clyde C. Jordan. Together the Jordans launched the East St. Louis Monitor in 1965.

Anne Jordan took over the newspaper in 1987 after the death of her husband.

“Of course everyone remembers Mr. Clyde C. Jordan as a political power, but they should remember that he had a very strong, supportive woman who had been and was a positive force in his and their children’s lives,” said retired Circuit Judge Milton Wharton.

She was the mother of five children, grandmother of 16 and great-grandmother of three.

Funeral arrangements are private.
