Woman struck, killed by Amtrak train when her SUV is stuck on tracks

A 35-year-old St. Louis woman died Wednesday night after an Amtrak train hit her vehicle in Brighton.

Illinois State Police investigators say Melanie Adams-Swearengen lost control of a 2012 Acura SUV when it drove off the road and through the parking lot of the Village Hall at 206 South Main St., according to according to Master Sgt. Jason Bradley.

The vehicle became stuck on the train tracks and was struck by the Amtrak train on the passenger side, ejecting and killing Adams-Swearengen.

One passenger on the train was taken to a hospital for minor injuries.

Approximately 44 Amtrak passengers boarded a different train and arrived in St. Louis around 5 a.m. Thursday.
