Man dies after being shot at East St. Louis housing complex

A 33-year-old man was shot early Friday at the John DeShields housing complex and later died.

Police Chief Michael Hubbard identified the victim as Deontavian Wilson. Hubbard did not have an address for the victim.

“The victim was driven to Touchette Hospital in Centreville for treatment of his wounds and later passed away from his injuries,” Hubbard said.

St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. said the autopsy revealed the victim sustained a gunshot wound to his chest.

“He was pronounced dead at 12:36 a.m. at Touchette Regional Hospital,” Dye said.

Cortez Slack, chief of East St. Louis Housing Authority’s Public Safety, said the shooting occurred between buildings two and six. He said Wilson was not a resident at the housing complex, which is located at 1235 McCasland Ave.

Slack said housing authority officers were notified of the shooting at 12:12 a.m. Friday.

“When find we got there, we couldn’t find anyone. There was no body there and no witnesses. My housing authorities officers learned the victim had been taken by private car to an area hospital. They went to the hospital, where they learned the victim had been pronounced dead,” Slack said.

This is the 22nd homicide in East St. Louis since the beginning of the year.
