A 2-year-old Beckemeyer boy died after he was struck by a car Monday afternoon in a Keyesport driveway.
Police say the boy was in the car, and climbed out as the driver closed the rear hatch, not realizing the boy was no longer in the car. The driver then began driving, hitting and killing the child. The boy, Jensen D. Voss, died of a fractured skull, according to Clinton County coroner Phillip Moss.
Police on Tuesday afternoon were not releasing the identity of the driver. A press release sent out by the Clinton County Sheriff’s Department mentioned the boy’s mother was at the scene, giving him CPR with a witness when deputies arrived.
A spokeswoman for the state Department of Children and Family Services said the agency was conducting an investigation involving the toddler’s mother after an allegation of neglect that stemmed from Voss’ death.
DCFS spokeswoman Veronica Resa also noted that the agency had no prior contact with the toddler’s family.
The child was found unconscious and not breathing just before 3 p.m. in the middle of a driveway near Fourth and Hayes streets, according to Clinton County Sgt. Dan Travous.
Shortly after arriving, according to Travous, deputies began to give the child CPR. Medical professionals eventually determined the child had died and efforts to save him were stopped.
The Clinton County’s Sheriff’s Office did not immediately release more information.
A family friend started a GoFundMe campaign Tuesday morning for Voss’ funeral expenses. It can be found at gofundme.com/jensens-final-expenses.
Voss’ funeral arrangements were pending Tuesday, but condolences could be left on his memorial page at the Zieren Funeral Home.
